I had to stick my neck out

I wanted to fly my drone tonight but lately I have only flew it with the safety mode on. I didn’t want it to fly away or crash. Tonight I decided to go for it. Earlier I was think about the turtle. It doesn’t like to go backwards but to go forward it has to stick it’s neck out. If your in the same boat as I was. I would tell you to go for it! It might be scary but the view from the top is awesome!

The concrete zombie maker

Ah, city life. It’s good for a few things but for me, at the end of the day it’s repressive, stale and overwhelming at times. So many people in such a small place. When you walk down the street the rule is look forward and don’t make eye contact, or the person may say hi and ask you how you are.

For me, living in a major city is like sleep having deprivation. My body is always tired and never feels totally rested. The longer I stay, the more clouded my mind feels. After a while you just lose sensation and drone on, going through the motions, one foot following the other.

In times like this, I think of the great wanderers like John Muir, Grandma Gatewood and other naturalists who found joy in leaving the crowded populations for something more. While it’s one of my life goals to walk the Appalachian Trail, for now I will just have to settle for smaller section hikes and daily walks.

“Few places in this world are more dangerous than home. Fear not, therefore, to try the mountain passes. They will kill care, save you from deadly apathy, set you free, and call forth every faculty into vigorous, enthusiastic action.”  John Muir

Walking lately has been such a breath of fresh air. Clearing the cobwebs of my mind and getting me out of the city funk that has held me for far too long. I’ve noticed too that the rest of my family has benefited from our hikes and camping trips. My kids who are forever attached to some electronic device have started looking less grim when I say let’s go adventuring today. They are also fighting less. My wife who is always as beautiful as a shining star looks even more remarkably radiant when she’s out in the woods.

Last night I went on a long walk and realized I’m still letting one foot follow the other. Left foot right foot, repeat. But now it’s the journey not the destination that makes the difference. Walking at 2mph affords you the time to unplug and look around. Without the electric white noise your free to think, free to dream. T.E. Lawrence said “All men dream: but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dreams with open eyes, to make it possible.”

Maybe it’s time to become dangerous and dream with our eyes open. What could we accomplish? Let’s take a walk and dream.

Flying is learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss.

I adore gadgets and toys and all things electronic (I’m basically a 40-year-old teenager). For Christmas My wife bought me a DJI Phantom drone. (insert squeal!)

I have wanted one for a long time. I would love to be able to get images and video from places that my legs can’t carry me. The thought of hiking with the kids and seeing a drone over us, offering a different view sends me to the moon!

I wanted to make a quick video of my first Drone flight. I wish I could have flown it a few more times but Baltimore has been windy and or raining. So take a minute and check out my piloting skills. On a side note, I’m very thankful I didn’t crash it on it’s maiden voyage.

Lastly, I hope everyone had a great holiday season and a safe and happy new year! 2016 was such an adventure for me! looking back it was such a great year for creativity! I can only hope that 2017 allows me to continue to grow as a designer, photographer, painter, sculptor…  an artist : )  I hope where or whenever you read this it finds you in good health and great spirit!

I took a walk in the woods and came out taller than the trees.

Starting the first of the year my family and I will be participating in the 52 Hike Challenge. We already try to have a weekly adventure day but with the weather getting colder they will slowly stop as we bug in for the winter. I really like the idea of a challenge that will help push us through the cold parts of the season. I think it will be a good life lesson for the kids. Sometimes you have to push forward even when you don’t feel like it.

Without a hawk to hunt, I haven’t spent much time in the woods this fall except for our adventure days. Yesterday, I decided I had to get out on a trail somewhere, anywhere. It was like my mind needed to reconnect and recharge. I only hiked about 7 miles in total but I got to see a waterfall and hiked to the top of a rock formation called the King and Queen seat.

My favorite part of the day was meeting a couple from New Zealand and sitting with them on top of a rock and listening to their adventures and sharing some of their dark chocolate hot coco. After about 40 minutes we said farewell and they were off for their next adventure.

I wish I would of taken more pictures but oh well, there’s always next week.

The Mystery Blogger Award

mysterybloggeraward
I would like to thank the person who created this award: Okoto enigma. You are an amazing and an inspiring blogger. This is really a great idea to introduce this award. It’s fun and helpful too!

This is my third nomination for this award. Thank you so much My Friend Deepika for the nomination. She is a a fantastic blogger! Her comments and posts are thoughtful and honest. My favorite thing about her blog is how many topics she can cover. Please visit her site you will love the inspirational and thought inspiring stories.

What the Award is about and why you should do this:

There are a lot of amazing blogs out there that haven’t been discovered, yet. And, most of these blogs deserve recognition. For that reason, I decided to create my own award; and nominate people who can also nominate others; and so on. This is one of the best ways to create a friendly community and build a link between bloggers in the blogosphere; as everyone gets nominated and they too can spread the fun by nominating more people for the award. I decided to call the award “Mystery Blogger Award.” Why? Because the meaning of my name, “Enigma” is “mystery.” So basically, it’s named after me; the creator. Plus, I think it’s cool because there are so many blogs that are still a mystery to us; and when we get to know them, it’s divine! And we find friends where we least expect.

WHAT IS MYSTERY BLOGGER AWARD?

“Mystery Blogger Award” is an award for amazing bloggers with ingenious posts. Their blog not only captivates; it inspires and motivates. They are one of the best out there, and they deserve every recognition they get. This award is also for bloggers who find fun and inspiration in blogging; and they do it with so much love and passion.

rules
The Rules are: ( Rules by Okoto Enigma – the creator of this award) :

What the Award is about and why you should do this:

You have to post these rules (Do not change any of these rules) in your blog too..I do not force everyone should do this..But by doing this we are helping each other..There are many talented bloggers out here who haven’t got enough exposure..

By re-blogging this post making your own sufficient changes (no changes for the rules) you are helping yourself and others too..If you have any question, feel free to ask..Thank you!!

Three things about me:

  1. I chair dance often when I’m designing.
  2. I love to eat peanut butter by itself.
  3. I’m in a band called Chili, Chips & Cheese and we make songs about chili and even have an album on iTunes and Spotify.

Questions asked to me:

  1. What’s your stress-buster?
Making Art, creating something from nothing. This allows my mind to go quiet and focus on just one thing.
  2. What is the one thing that you like about yourself?
I like that I can respond to something instead of reacting.
  3. Which movie/book character can you relate to or that matches your personality?
Ohhh good one! I think Sam Gribly from My Side of the Mountain. I can identify with wanting to get back to the old ways of doing things and living off the land. Plus, we are both falconers!
  4. Are you a morning person?
I like waking up at the Crack of Noon : ) Honestly, night time I find myself being very active and making art.
  5. If you could redo a mistake, which one would it be? (Weird Question)
I used to dream about being able to go back in time and fix mistakes. Maybe because I’m older, I don’t think I would change a single mistake. Every mistake I have made I learned from. It’s made me who I am. My mistakes have made me stronger : )

My Questions:

  1. What Inspires you?
  2. Tell me 3 things that you can do that your proud of.
  3. Your on a desert island and you have water and food, What’s the 2 things you have to have?
  4. Where do you get inspiration from?
  5. If Batman and Aquaman fought who would win and Why? (Weird Question)

The world feels small to me

I love the movie Horton hears a who. The idea of a microcosm living in a subatomic world. It’s made me dream about our earth and solar system existing on something like a ball of lint.

Maybe that’s why I love macro photography. It allows me to see something in a different way then I’m used to.

If you have a camera phone get something like an ollo clip and zoom into the unseen worlds of macro.

When photography sessions go wrong.

With the holidays approaching at blistering speed, my wife and I decided this year we’re going to send out a family holiday card, instead of the usual nothing we send out. We always want to send cards, sometimes we even buy them but I usually forget to mail them.

But this year will be different! For the last week we’ve been planning to hike up to an overlook called the King and Queen seat. We even put thought into our outfits, the backgrounds, the “look” and then a few days before the shoot, Mother Nature flips us the bird. What was supposed to be 60 degrees (f) is now going to be 40 degrees and windy. Argh!

We had a plan B! The thought was to wake up and go to an arboretum and set up there. However we slept in and weren’t ready to walk out the door until it was noon. Now we’re all hungry. So instead of driving for an hour, doing the shoot and then getting lunch, we’re eating nasty Burger King and heading to a local park so my son can still attend his soccer awards.

At this point I know we should just cancel. Too many things have changed and the likelihood of finding a place with a pretty background, no wind, good lighting and and and… will be hard to find. If this adventure was with a paying client, I would of suggested we postpone, but you’re with your family, you’re super dad, you helped an old lady across the street, surely Karma will be smiling down on you. Wrong!

We get to the spot I think will be nice. Not too much wind. I find a good angle and realized my tripod isn’t in my car but at my office. (face palm)  But wait! I have my small Jobie tripod. Oh wait the part that connects camera to tripod is on top of the washer because you put it in your pocket. (double face palm)

Pissed at myself, I reluctantly look for a stump to place my camera on and press the 10 second delay (my cordless trigger is dead) just to run back and try to look as calmly as can be. As you probably guessed by the lack of pictures from the family, that didn’t go well. In the back of my head I hear a mantra that I’ve lived my entire life by. (PPPPPP). Proper Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance.

Opportunity can come from failure. So we spend a bit of time just walking through the state park. We didn’t find another location that would allow us to get the shots we were after, but it was nice to spend time with the family. Having the sun on my face, feeling the wind and smelling the water was a good trade off for a photography session gone wrong.

Maybe karma knew all along that I just needed a recharge. At the end of the day we still got the project completed. We used pictures from this last year of adventuring. So all is well that ends well. Here are some of the pics I snapped from yesterday.

I hope I don’t go to jail

Beyond this sign might be your best photograph ever!

Rules are made to keep us safe, but you have to know when not to follow them. If you always follow them you will never know the secret of what’s on the other side! In my life, the sweetest fruits have always been on the thinnest, most rule guarded branches. There have been times when I have been detained because stopping on the side of the road to photograph a bridge draws attention from the authorities; but so will scaling a building to capture an amazing sunset over the city.

Yesterday we went to a National Park that had so many rules on where you could go. I’m sure they are thinking about safety for the masses, but I’m not a mass. I am a person, a person who wants to show what’s on the other side of where you should be.

As a photographer, the best shots are always, without a doubt, in the places that are hard to reach or uncomfortable to get to. It’s like nature demands a test to get it’s treasure. Sometimes it’s a long walk in bramble bushes, boggy moors, bug infested swamps or smooth as silk rocks with a long drop down. Other times it may be a small ledge that holds the perfect shot if only you can repress your fear of heights to capture the sunset you’ve been after.

While I’m not suggesting we should be careless in our adventures, we only have one life and body. I am suggesting that sometimes you should take a chance and break the rules, color outside the lines, hop the guardrail to get that shot. You might be surprised at what you discover both in your art and within yourself.

Here are some of the photographs from yesterday. I will be uploading a montage video to my youtube channel. If you haven’t yet subscribed to my youtube channel please check it out and if you like short art videos, please consider subscribing CLICK HERE to visit my channel.

8 hours of freedom!

When the boss man says you have to use your vacation time. Use it, or lose it.

Part of the problem is I love to work! I’m professionally a web and graphic designer for an educational company. I find a lot of love for the projects I work on, so typically at the end of the year I have amassed a chink of time that needs to be spent by January 1, or else I will lose it. So this week I’m off. Because my wife is working and the kids are in school I am totally free for 8 hours. 🎉🎉

Yesterday I wanted to go out and art something but the winds and cold temperatures kept me in the house. However today, the winds are gone and its adventure time.

While I’m not sure what exactly I will be doing. I know it does involve the following:

  • 🏋🏻‍♀️ working out
  • ☕️ having an overpriced coffee somewhere
  • 🚿 showering
  • 📷 taking pictures

So I guess it’s time to carpe denim (seize the jeans) and get to it. 🙂 Maybe I will visit this spot again. Until later, Stay Random. : )
